Book Review: The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

5 Stars for The Nightingale by @kristinhannahauthor. This one was heavy. I try to limit my "heavy," reads to a handful a year. It's hard for me to shake off books like The Nightingale and just pick up my next read. This book was originally published in 2015 so I'm behind the rest of the world in the captivating story of two sisters growing up and coming of age in the middle of the Holocaust in France.

The Nightingale is an inspirational and heartbreaking story of resilience and fortitude. It is about powerful "quiet," women, of  the will to keep fighting, and relentlessly moving forward. It is a story that will never get old because the themes, good and the bad, are evergreen.

The depths of hopelessness, disregard for human life, devastation, and brutality were difficult to stomach and feel, and they were very thick themes in the book. Unfortunately, I feel they are necessary because I believe it is the only way to even paint a fraction of how awful that time truly was on the timeline of humanity.

In my humble opinion, this novel should be required reading. It's moving. Pivotal. It transcends space, time, and has the power to reach right into the depths of your soul and connect you with characters who will stay with you. I will carry Isabelle and Vianne with me for a very long time and this book will always have a home on my bookshelf.

Book Review: Winter Series (4 books) by Elin Hilderbrand

5 stars for all of the Winter Series books by @Elinhilderbrand! Oh, what a winter treat they are. I thought I would review each one separately, and initially started out that way. However, I gobbled up the books so quickly over Thanksgiving, I decided to review them all together.

The series started out as a trilogy, with Elin writing the last one despite having only planned for 3. I must say, the last one was my favorite and a tear-jerker. After spending hundreds of pages with the characters over multiple Christmases in the books, the final one really shook me and I'm sad to see my relationship with each of the characters end.

If you're looking for some great holiday reading, look no further. Elin's  Winter Series (Winter Street, Winter Stroll, Winter Storms, and Winter Solace) are worth picking up. With just the right mix of drama, heartstrings, eggnog, and Grinch, you can bet you'll fall in love with Christmas on Nantucket. If you're anything like me, you'll have a few things added to your bucketlist after these amazing books.

Book Review: Winter Street by Elin Hilderbrand

5 Stars for Winter Street by @elinhilderbrand. Let me start by saying, if you're looking for a holiday book to cozy up with, this is the one. Or FOUR. I am thankful that I have all four of these waiting patiently on my bookshelf. I wouldn't recommend starting the first one without the follow ups. I don't know how all of you wait years for writers to complete books in series.

What makes this book such a great holiday read? Well, the setting is a festive Inn on Nantucket. It comes complete with Nutcrackers, eggnog, Christmas carols, and garland. It wouldn't be a cozy read without family drama. This family comes with quite a bit and you'll feel right at home when you meet the characters.

You'll have to wait for the ugly Christmas sweaters, though. They come in book 2. Which I started immediately after finishing this one.

I'm grateful for books that give me some place warm, cozy, and festive to go when I have to stay where I am. And, a Christmas on Nantucket couldn't get more believable than this series.

Book Review: What I Talk About When I Talk About Running by Haruki Murakami

4 stars for What I Talk About When I Talk About Running by Haruki Murakami.

Many people have raved about Haruki Murakami's writings in the past. I must admit, I've never read anything else by him. I stumbled on this book when looking for books about running. And, I'm really glad that I did. Equal parts memoir and running and writing advice, I was able to finish this book in a day.

Haruki shares his experiences and calls out the parallels between running and writing. He talks about both writing and running chose him. Being a passionate reader and passionate runner, this book resonated with me. I gave it 4 stars because I think he could have dug a bit deeper. I felt he only skimmed the surface in relating how significant writing and reading are to his life and I found myself wanting to know more.

If you are a runner and a writer or a runner and a reader, I recommend this one.

Book Review: A Bad Day For Sunshine by Darynda Jones

4 Stars for A Bad Day for Sunshine by Darynda Jones.

A quick read for the fall, I liked this one! I've been in quite a reading slump and even found that I stretched this one out a little longer than usual. Because of my slump, I'm not sure my delay was all on me or the writing.

Nevertheless, Darynda creates characters you will relate to and find yourself wondering who is involved in the disappearances of two children in the small town. I'm not usually a fan of mysteries told from the view of a police officer or investigator. That being said, Darynda did a good job pulling in the chief's daughter. I was captivated by her from the first few pages in the book.

I read A Bad Day For Sunshine for book club and was so glad my friends told me that the ending is a cliffhanger. I'm not sure when the sequel is due to be released but, I look forward to more of Levi...that is for sure!

Book Review: The Girl in the Mirror by Rose Carlyle Release Date 10/20/2020

5 Stars for The Girl in the Mirror by @rosecarlyle100! If you're looking for a book with a twist, look no further! The end of the book was like the grand finale of a fireworks show! I thought the twists were over, I thought I had everything figured out and then, BAM even MORE twists. I could hardly keep up and loved it.

The last 50 pages in particular were amazing for me as a reader and I could not put it down. This is the debut novel for @rosecarlyle100 and I'm expecting more great books from her in the future the way this one seemed so effortlessly to unfold on the pages.

I think this one would also make a great movie. I wonder if Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen are available. Did anyone else have them in mind the entire book as the twin characters?

Book Review: Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance

5 Stars for Hillbilly Elegy by J.D.Vance.

I am limited unfortunately to the # characters on my instagram review. So, I'll consolidate my review by trying to leave all of the personal ways this book affected me out of the review.

I am not a hillbilly. But, my ancestors were sharecroppers in NC. Their crops were tobacco and moonshine. I come from a long line of badassery. And, I try to remind myself of that when I feel defeated, underestimated, or not good enough. I remind myself that I am from a long line of people who have done really hard things, lost a lot, and have often been too ashamed to discuss any of it with the likes of me.

My mother was not a drug addict and my father was not an alcoholic. But, I recall what it was like to have to walk to the barn to use the bathroom. I remember the tub that I used to get bathed in that was moved into the kitchen because we were in a house with no plumbing. I remember how we gathered in 1 room in the back of the house to stay warm because we only had a woodstove in 1 room for heat. I'm white but not a stranger to poverty.

I love this book. And the vivid imagery and descriptions J.D uses. His Mamaw felt like home to me. And, it's amazing how words and memories can do that to us, isn't it? This book was heavy. But, isn't that where the power is?

Dare I say, our country needs a leader like J.D. Vance. An overcomer. Someone who knows what it feels like to scrape by only by the edge of his teeth and the kindness of those who saw something special in him. This is not a political message. It's a 5 Star review from a white girl who grew up with challenges, and because of the grit and persistence of my family, and countless teachers, mentors, and application approvers along the way, is reviewing a book that I read for FUN.

I could write an essay response to Hillbilly Elegy. It was personal, it was uplifting, and is going to sit with me for a bit. I try to take a break from my thrillers and mysteries from time to time to sit with a powerful work of nonfiction. This was one of those.

Book Review: The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom Released in 2010

5 Stars for The Kitchen House by @kathleengrissom. This book left me speechless and wide-eyed. Many reviews compared this book to The Help. I'd say, I only partially agree with that due to the underlying themes of slavery, racism, poverty, deceit, and they social injustices they share.

This book, having been set in the late 1700s/early 1800s was thrilling, heart-wrenching, and in my opinion, a MUST READ. It really pulled me in and I was enamored with the characters and on edge for so many of them throughout the entire book.

A plantation, slaves, a captain, family secrets, sacrifices, and unfaltering love will have you scratching your head and wondering why no one you know has been talking about this book.

I loved it, @kathleengrissom. My copy will proudly remain on my shelf with my other cherished books for my children for when they are old enough to appreciate such a powerful and thought-provoking treasure.

Book Review: Troubles in Paradise by Elin Hilderbrand Release Date 10/6/2020

5 stars for Elin's final installment of her Paradise Series. Lucky for me, I was late to the Paradise party so it shortened my waiting time significantly. I'm not sure how others waited as long as they did between the releases of her 3 books.

The characters will always stay with me, I was so happy to join them in St. John's for book 3 and felt like they were waiting for me to return so they could finish the story with me.

5 stars for the setting (oh, the SETTING) and the characters- I'm still #teamcash. And, 5 stars for a heavy plot with suspense, surprise, and at times nothing short of chaos on the island.

Troubles in Paradise is a great book to end the summer on, as we transition to the long-sleeve, pale skin, beanie-wearing weather. I highly recommend all 3 of the trilogy for a good mental vacation. I promise you will feel the St. John sunshine on page 1.

Also, this book pairs well with a strong rum punch. I loved how you wrapped this one up just so, @elinhilderbrand!

Book Review: The Exiles by Christina Baker Kline

5 Stars for The Exiles by Christina Baker Kline! This was my second book by Christina Baker Kline. It's no coincidence that I loved The Exiles by her. I found myself underlining a lot, as I often do when I read phrases or parts that stick out to me and are truly well written. I find Christina Baker Kline has an ability to create characters and settings that allow you to step away for moments in your real life. When you return to her pages, it's like you never left.

The Exiles was a pretty dark book, the settings were dark and it was metaphorically dark. I was moved by the strength of the characters and their perseverance, courage, and strength through extraordinarily hard times. The grit of the characters, and their commitment to one another was moving.

If you're looking for something a little bit different that will suck you right in, this one is for you. It isn't a a thriller, but I'd say there are definite scenes packed full of suspense. @bakerkline creates women in her books that we all need to know and be influenced by.

Book Review: Anxious People by Fredrik Backman

0 stars for Anxious People by Fredrik Backman. If I have to choose a star to leave a review, I'll go with a 1. I was looking forward to this read, having heard amazing things about it. This was my first Fredrik Backman novel so I had high hopes of falling in love with another writer's work.

By page 100, I felt like I was watching 8 squirrels chase each other all around the yard and up and down the same trees. I was appalled at the police interviews and the only reason I kept reading was because I was fascinated with the way all of the characters were related. After I figured out how their lives intersected, I just could not keep flipping the pages.

I tried flipping 50 pages forward to see if I could just get past a section. No luck. After reading other reviews, I find that others felt the same way, which makes this very interesting. It appears people either absolutely loved it or absolutely hated it. #anxiouspeople #bookreview #1star #toughread #didnotfinish #dnf #readgoodbooks #bibliophile #booknerd #sendmebooks #hardtoleavebadreviews #nextbookplease

Book Review: The Return by Nicholas Sparks Release Date 9/29/2020

3 Stars for The Return by Nicholas Sparks! It has been years since I've settled down with a Nicholas Sparks read. I'm always impressed at how different his novels are from one to the next and always sure I'm in for a quick read. I gave this one 3 stars because I found the middle to drag quite a bit, atypical for Sparks, in my opinion.

A young veteran is left his grandfather's house and bees to tend to. A small town sheriff has her heart on guard, and a runaway with a secret past all collide in a way only Sparks could create for us. His recipe for great reads remains dependable with loveable characters in heart-wrenching situations. With 3 pages left, I was still on edge to see how this one would end!

I've read every.single.one of @Nicholassparks books the week they have been released since I was a teenager. Book Review: The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager

5 Stars for The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager!

I held on to this book for a bit, knowing it was the only remaining @Riley.Sager book I hadn't read yet. What I truly love about his writing is that the style, detail, and suspense are all a guarantee. And, each plot, mystery, and book is very different.

A summer camp nestled far away for girls from prominent and wealthy families is forever changed by the disappearance of 3 young campers. Their only other cabin mate returns 15 years later when it reopens. She returns to uncover the secrets buried 15 years ago.

Each time I thought I knew where this one was leading, Riley flipped the script and led me down a different wooded path. His incredible ability to paint with words is why I will continue to seek out all of his future books. If you're looking for a thriller, a mystery, a fast read, I can recommend this one with 5 stars.  #thelasttimeIlied #rileysager #5stars #bookreview #sendmebooks #readgoodbooks #readmore #mystery #thriller #suspense #mustread #bookstoreadduringcovid #cozybooks

Book Review: One by One by Ruth Ware

3 Stars for One by One by Ruth Ware! To say this book was "highly anticipated," for me would be the understatement of 2020. I've been fangirling Ruth Ware books since The Woman in Cabin 10. I was overjoyed when this one was an option for my Book of the Month box.

It was atypical of Ruth. I found it hard to follow, even after investing 100 pages. But, because it's Ruth Ware, I gave her time to fold in all of her ingredients and let it marinate. And then, on page 282, my waiting finally paid off. My breath caught and I literally exhaled with excitement.

The setting for One by One will have the tip of your nose and your toes chilly. Overall, I was disappointed but that may have been because I had been anxiously awaiting it for so long. The reviews on this one are mixed. What did you think?

Book Review: Summer of '69 by Elin Hilderbrand

3 stars for Elin's Summer of '69.  I've lost count of how many Elin books I've read this summer. Each one catches me off guard. For some reason, I expect her books to be the same. But, I am continuously surprised at how she comes up with the characters in circumstances so relatable. This one was easy and light-hearted, one you could crawl into and let the rest of the world march ahead for a bit. I gave it 3 stars because it just wasn't one I had a hard time putting down. I had to keep grabbing it and carrying it with me, knowing I have a few other books lined up made me want to fly through this one. I feel it could have been about 100 pages shorter and had the same ending. Nevertheless, it was classic Elin with her amazing setting and descriptions. #easyread #3stars #covidescape #booklover #bookreviews #sendmethebooks #bookedlife #Nantucket #Marthasvineyard #readgoodbooks

Book Review: What Happens in Paradise by Elin Hilderbrand

5 Stars for What Happens in Paradise by @elinhilderbrand! Elin took my back to St. John and her beloved characters seamlessly. I can't imagine having to wait for this one after reading the first one. However, now I find that I'm waiting until October for the final book in the series.

The first book had a cliffhanger of an ending and so.did.this.one. What the heck? Elin's honed use of imagery is powerful and immersive. I felt like I needed to keep applying the SPF50.

If you're looking for something light to read in between your thrillers like I was, I can recommend anything by Elin so far that I've read. However, I'm slightly in love with the characters in the Paradise trilogy. The ingredients I love the most about her books in this trilogy are: scandal, sibling rivalry (#teamcash), the FBI, references to restaurants and bars I hope to one day visit, and a few romances that never seem to workout like I think they will.

I'm in the middle of Summer of '69 by her as well. Then, I've got One by One from Ruth Ware and Anxious People from Fredrik Backman waiting impatiently patient. I'm off for a few extra days next week and looking forward to fancy drinks by myself with lots of page turning.

5 Stars for Elin Hilderbrand's Winter In Paradise! I went into this one knowing it was a trilogy. Holy moly, I practically inhaled this book.  It had all of the ingredients I was looking for in my next read- secrets, paradise, wealth, and island life! The plot kept me turning pages in a dreamy setting. If you're looking for a great, addictive read, grab your coconut rum and buckle up.

But, we have to pace ourselves. The third book in the trilogy isn't out until October so...sip and read this one in monderation. I loved this one, @elinhilderbrand!

Book Review: Final Girls by Riley Sager

4 Stars for Final Girls by @RileySager! You know what I love the most about Riley Sager? There's no building up, no waiting for something to happen. There's none of this introduce all the characters and THEN set the hook. Nope. Not Riley Sager's books. You're saying, "no," to all kinds of commitments and suggesting cereal for dinner on PAGE 1.

So far, this is my least favorite of Riley's books. It had so much gore, more than I typically like in a mystery/thriller. But, I stayed with it because um, it's a Riley Sager book. And, I'm so glad I did. I didn't see the ending coming. It's great if you're looking for a book to snuggle up with as the seasons start to change.

This leaves me 1 more Riley Sager book to read and review. But, I think I'm going to head off to spend the Winter in Paradise, first ;)

Book Review: Redhead by the Side of the Road by Anne Tyler

2 Stars for Redhead by the Side of the Road by Anne Tyler. This book was about an ordinary man seemingly content to go through the motions of his ordinary life. He lived a life where everything was predictable and just so. He liked everything in control, in it's place, and lived a life full of order.

That being said, I felt it was an, "ordinary," book. This was my first Anne Tyler novel so I was pretty disappointed there wasn't a rich plot and equally disappointed when the turning point only came on the very last page. I kept holding out hope for something exciting, something that never occurred.

After being on such a roll with 5 star books, my last two reads have me holding my breath for what I crack open next.

Book Review: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

4 Stars for The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid! 4 Stars since I was able to guess the twist before reading it.

This book had me rooting for the underdog(s) from page 1. Overlooked, underestimated...I can relate to Monique Grant. So, I was grabbed almost instantly. I was counting on her getting her big break in the book. I had no idea the journey I was in for.

Having anticipated the twist before reading it, I still loved the book and felt that @Tjenkinsreid did an an incredible job of pulling things together so nicely at the end. This was another quick read for me, and so very different from books I've read and/or reviewed in the past. If you're looking for a quick read that's different from all the others, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo will be an interesting one for you, no doubt.

Book Review: RUN to the FINISH by Amanda Brooks

A thankful and hearty 5 stars for RUN to the the FINISH by Amanda Brooks or @runtothefinish. As a "newbie," to running, I had been looking for a resource, guide, and sisterly advice on running to answer questions I had and help me with questions I didn't have yet. RUN to the FINISH is the perfect running buddy for the introverted, busy people in the world who don't know what to ask or have anyone close to them they can ask.

Amanda offers tips and pointers on everything from electrolyte replacement and chafing (THANK YOU!). She talks about running in the winter. In the rain. And, the options of water-resistant rain gear vs. waterPROOF rain gear. Spoiler alert: Pick the water-resistant for running :)

There are tips on stretching, endurance training, race day, and recovery information for post-runs. Regardless of if you're a daily, neighborhood runner like myself or if you're training for a big race, she lays out details in a "take what fits," way that is enduring, honest, and so, so needed.

There are resources at the back, including links for her blog and extra communities of support and an index for quick help and reference when needed. I highly recommend this book for newbie runners or seasoned runners. I think you'll find her tone, enthusiasm, and tried and true advice refreshing. I've been looking for this book for quite some time and I'm happy to call Amanda Brooks an instafriend and an inspiration.

Book Review: The Bookshop of the Broken Hearted by Robert Hillman

3

3 Stars for the Bookshop of the Broken Hearted by Robert Hillman. I was in love with the way Robert Hillman strings his descriptions of words together. The depths of his descriptions don't stop with the setting or the characters. Instead, he describes matters and emotions of the heart. I would say this layer of depth is very rare in the books that I read.

The emphasis on the love and respect of books was enduring. I found myself dreaming about the old cash register, the cedar shelves, and the gleam from the beeswax polish. I wanted to hide away in a corner of the old barn and get lost, just as the many lucky visitors to Hannah's Bookstore were able to do.

I landed on 3 stars because I felt it dragged quite a bit in the middle. I got lost a bit in some of the history but appreciated the read and adventure, nonetheless.

Book Review: 28 Summers by Elin Hilderbrand

Well, another 5 star review for you. Maybe you should just be thankful I'm finding all of the good ones for you, okay? 28 Summers by @ElinHilderbrand was my first Elin novel. YES, REALLY. I like to interrupt my thriller streaks from time to time and the beautiful cover and description sucked me right in at Target last weekend. I read this book in 2 days. And it's a whopper.

28 Summers isn't a "love story," okay? It isn't all rose petals and picnics on the beach.  This book shines a light on how easy it is for the characters to lead a life they are "supposed to," lead versus the life that they want. Years pass by and before any of the main characters know it, they've all grown up and settled down, had children, and accepted their lives for what they are. I found this book very thought-provoking and beautifully written.

Thank you to @ElinHilderbrand for providing the perfect getaway book to Nantucket when we're all forced to stay here right here.

I've already scored a few of her other books and you can bet that as soon as the frost is on the pumpkin, I'm going to be diving into her winter series and praying for a snowstorm.

Book Review: Lock Every Door by Riley Sager

I'm on a roll with 5 star ratings right now. I know it, okay. I could chalk it up to luck, to a whizbang bookstagram community, or to just reader's luck.

Lock Every Door was my second Riley Sager book. After reading Home Before Dark, I was craving more of Riley's writing. Lock Every Door didn't disappoint and may have been my favorite of the two.

Set in New York, the Bartholomew is a dream setting for this thriller. The description of the building itself is so remarkable, I felt like I was there with Jules in her apartment. I was fascinated with the life, times, and secrets within the walls of the Bartholomew.

Something mysterious and dark is going on within the walls of the Bartholomew, and Riley kept my heart racing from page one. With about 50 pages left, I had to retreat to my bedroom closet to finish this one without interruptions. I never saw the ending coming and didn't know who to trust in the book!

Riley Sager is my new Ruth Ware. I'll be waiting in line when his next release comes out. I still have Final Girls of his to read but may space it out a bit to savor....

Book Review: A Million Junes by Emily Henry

5 Stars for A Million Junes by Emily Henry! Yes, 5 STARS! After reading Beach Read, Emily's most recent book, I craved more of her writing. A Million Junes was WAY different and hooked me in the way I haven't been hooked by a book in quite a while.

A Million Junes is magical in that Twilight way at the beginning. Look, I mean that in the very best way. It's magical, mythical, and full of symbolism. Light meets the dark, Earth meets the Heavens, and star-crossed lovers meet the fate they have been destined for. You will become entangled in the roots of a Million Junes.

I was holding my breath with the turn of every page while I had to just sit and read about the main characters do all of the things their families have been forbidden from doing for generations.

A Million Junes is a push and a pull. It's an ebb and flow. It's so real you could touch it, and make believe. It's made up of Memories and loss, of finding love and coming home. It's equal parts desperation and devastation. And, it's completely lovely.

I read this book in 2 days. Meaning, I STARTED it yesterday. You are overdue for A Million Junes. You can thank me later!

Book Review: Home Before Dark by Riley Sager

Thankfully, I have found another 5 star read. I am so glad. I didn't get to start this one right away, once I received it from Book Of the Month club, as I was in the middle of a few running books. This is the first thriller I've read in a bit and it was GREAT!

If you're looking for spooky, skin-crawling, mystery...this one has all of those things. Also, it's important to note that there were quite a few BIG twists at the end. And, you know I love a twist. I finished this one by the pool and was so thankful to have some quiet time to sop up the last few pages.

This was the first book I've read by Riley Sager, I'll have to keep my eyes open for Riley's others, as I've heard they're all great.

Book Review: Girls of Summer by Nancy Thayer New Release May 2020

5 Stars for Girls of Summer by @nancythayerbooks!

I've been on a roll again with good books. This one didn't disappoint and is another summer beach read that I high recommend if you're looking for something easy-going and offering to take you away.
Set on the island of Nantucket, you can practically see the cedar siding houses, bright blue hydrangeas, and feel the slower pace of life with each flipping of the page.

This book has a great ending, all bundled up nicely. It begs for you to pack a bag with linen pants and a hoodie and head on up to Nantucket. I fell in love with the imagery, the quaint setting, and the characters.

Looking for a book to carry with you on the long roadtrip to the beach? How about one to read while you have to stay where you are? This one is it.

Dear Netgalley, please don't disown me because I have not addressed my approved books in awhile. I purchased this book the first time I stepped inside my local bookstore since the town reopened and I needed it. That's the thing about books, they wait....

Book Review: Running Home by Katie Arnold

5 Stars for Running Home by Katie Arnold!

This book was beautifully written. I'm on a running book kick right now and this book was a treat! I found myself completely immersed in this sweet book Katie wrote about her life, and the whole left in her hole and spirit after the death of her father.

You will laugh, you will cry. You'll highlight and star paragraphs that you'll want to come back to later. This one deserves a spot on every runner's bookshelf. As a newbie to running, I was fascinated by Katie's drive for ultramarathon running and her ability to transcend the pain and trials she faced. The best part about this book though is that it doesn't matter if you are a novice who runs/walks or someone who is a competitive runner, you will be able to relate to the whys of running.

I was blown away by the imagery and descriptions Katie used to describe the settings she runs in and the memories she had from childhood. Also, because of Katie, Santa Fe is on my "must visit," list of places to see.

Book Review: 401 by Ben Smith

4 STARS for 401 by Ben Smith!
Ben Smith tells an amazing underdog story with 401. He ran 401 marathons in 401 days. Yeah. Really.
A book about turning the troubles and emotional baggage from your past into fuel for good, 401 is a great albeit atypical, coming of age story.

I'm currently on a "running book," phase. As a new runner, I can't get my hands on enough documentation about running. Common themes that I read about the lives of runners I see in myself, which reminds me when I'm not running that I have what it takes to run.

Ben's story is remarkable. He says over and over that he's just an ordinary guy. But, he is doing extraordinary things and making a difference 1 person, 1 reader, 1 runner at a time. He sold all of his possessions in order to have the money he needed to hit the road. And, all the money he raises goes towards anti-bullying organizations.

I loved this book, and it will remain on my shelf as a beacon of hope, light, and encouragement when I need it. If you're at the beginning, I think you'll find a voice that resonates with you as well.

Next up, Running Home by Katie Arnold.

Book Review: Mile Markers by Kristin Armstrong

4 STARS for MILE MARKERS by Kristin Armstrong. Most of you know, the only thing that I give up my sacred reading time for is now running. I used to run in college and have been on a hiatus for (shhh) 15 years now. I finally got sick enough of myself and my excuses to hit the pavement again. And, I needed some MAJOR motivation.

I wondered what it is that runners tell themselves when they don't want to show up. What do they do to increase their endurance? What shoes do they love? What about that stitch in my right ribcage that isn't allowing me to take a deep breath?

I found Kristin's book on a running blog, along with a few others that I'm diving into- feet first. I think this one was a good one to start with, although I didn't get much insight into the hows and whats, I did come away with some nuggets and have been able to see how my running frame of mind is spilling over into my daily life.

The book reads like a bundle of articles, journal entries, or nuggets. It's a bit all over the place, but that was okay because most of the time lately my attention span for reading has been zilch nada.

Next up on my list is 401 by Ben Smith. The man who ran 401 marathons in 401 days and changed his life forever. I'll be starting it tonight and hope to be finished with it in a few days and also, forever changed.

Any running readers out there? What books have had an impact on your growth?

Cheers to all of you!

Book Review: Beach Read by Emily Henry

A very happy 5 STARS for Beach Read by @emilyhenrywrites! As I've shared many times in the last month, I've just been struggling to get into anything. Like most of you, reading is my JAM, my therapy, my noise cut-off-er. When this one arrived in the beautiful royal blue @bookofthemonth box, I was excited for many reasons.

I immediately fell in love with January Andrews. First of all, what's not to love about the name January? Then, when I found out she was a writer, going through some pretty heavy things, in her father's "secret," beach house, I was sucked in.

Enter Gus. What a dreamboat! Neighbor at the beach house. Also a writer. jaded.

This book was everything I needed. I found myself not picking it up if I didn't have big blocks of time to devour it. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll melt, you'll sizzle. Summer reading doesn't get much better than this, folks. Book Review: Untamed by Glennon Doyle Release Date 3/10/2020

5 Stars for Untamed by Glennon Doyle!

I had this one on the shelf waiting for a little over a month. I heard so much about it and felt a little hesitant after I loved Love Warrior and then shortly after heard about her divorce and relationship with Abby because it felt like everything I loved about her may all be a lie.

That wasn't the case. I could relate to so much of how her life changed and she could no longer live the life she had tried so desperately to fit back into. I could relate to her questions about everything she had been told. I found that I highlighted practically half the book.

This book is what the world needs right now. And, I hope if you're on the fence about picking it up like I was, that you'll keep turning the pages like I did. I think you'll come out better on the other side.

I wish I could thank someone @netgalley or @randomhouse for an advanced reader's copy of this book. But, I am solely responsible for picking it up all by myself and feeling there could be something inside just for me. And you. Thanks @glennondoyle for this treasure!

Book Review: Rules for Moving by Nancy Star Release Date 5/19/20

3 Stars for Rules for Moving out 5/19/20.
As an advice columnist, Lane likes to retreat in the lives of her readers. When tragedy strikes, she realizes she can no longer hide away in her work and continue to ignore the issues in her life that need to be addressed.

Nancy Star takes us on a journey with Lane and her son as they deal with circumstances most of us cannot imagine. Picking things up and starting over doesn't fix everything, as it seemed to do when Lane was growing up.

I gave this one 3 stars because it was a relatively easy read but it just didn't grab me. It seemed predictable, besides at the very beginning and I kept waiting for things to turn. But, that could just be the thriller/suspense lover in me.

The character development was so-so. I felt like I could understand Lane and even her son, Henry. My heart went out to her in the very beginning and I rallied for her. From a literary sense though, I didn't feel like I was committed to seeing them through and wasn't surprised with how things turned out in the end.

Thank you to Lake Union Publishing and Netgalley for the chance to dive into Rules for Moving before everyone else. I am so thankful to have an abundance of books during this trying time, to keep me busy and allow me to escape.

Book Review: Joy Comes in the Morning by Betty Smith Released in 1963

4 STARS for Joy in the Morning by Betty Smith. Now that I have finished all of her books  it will be interesting to see how easy it is for me to crack open my my typical Netgalley reads. I did order Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, and Homeward Angel by Thomas Wolfe. I figure they have waited years and years for me to read them, they can wait a bit longer while I catch up on some ARCs.

Book Review: Tomorrow Will Be Better by Betty Smith Originally Released 1948

5 Stars for Tomorrow Will Be Better by Betty Smith.
I finished Betty Smith's other book, Maggie-Now earlier in the week. Desperate to get my hands on more of her writing, I went right to Tomorrow Will Be Better. It didn't disappoint and had so many parallels and similar threads as Maggie-Now and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.

Betty Smith's writing has become a haven for me. I remember what it was like to be a poor child, rich in the love department. I very much feel myself as a character in one of her books. I remember what it was like to have one heat source in the house, no running water, and to put plastic over the windows in the winter to keep the cold out.

I feel that Betty Smith writes so effortlessly and honestly because she writes about the life that she knew, growing up in Brooklyn. The most interesting thing she consistently writes is the way her characters are so completely moved, broken, and empathetic. Yet, they don't communicate it to one another. She often writes about how a character will want to say something or be about to say something, usually in order to show affection or give praise, and then they decide against it. It's so unfortunate and I think that lots of people are the same today. For many of the same reasons.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about the books of hers I have read. They are different. They are profound. They are coming of age and heart-wrenching. I highly recommend them.

Book Review: Maggie- Now by Betty Smith Released in 1958

4 STARS for Maggie- Now by Betty Smith. Reading A Tree Grows in Brooklyn earlier this year has continued to sit with me. I have moved on and read more typical books of mine, thrillers, mysteries, suspense mostly all new releases. I haven't been able to stop thinking about A Tree Grows Up in Brooklyn. During these challenging and foreign times, I find solace in the way she wrote about Brooklyn and the characters she developed in the middle of poverty.

After giving up on my neighborhood book club selection this month because I couldn't focus and keep track of the characters, I also closed an ARC I received from Netgalley for the same reason. I want to tell everyone, "it's not you, it's me." So, I reached for more of Betty Smith. Hopeful. Dreaming she would be able to transport me back to the streets of Brooklyn and introduce me to new characters in a similar way.

I gave Maggie-Now 4 stars because at the beginning, the story starts with an Irish immigrant. I had a hard time knowing where it was heading and wondering if the entire book was going to have "me," instead of, "my" when the characters were talking. I continued to long for Brooklyn, not Ireland. And then, BAM! He moved to the US. And, once again, Betty Smith held my heart and eyeballs for 2 days straight every break, meal, and post-kid bedtime minute I could get.

I also have Joy Comes in The Morning and Tomorrow Will Be Better by Betty Smith. I'm thinking of neglecting my TBR list for a bit. And, getting back to good. It's such different writing that I typically read. And, certainly a different type of suspense and grip. All that said, let me just say, "it isn't you, it's me," as I continue to look for literature that is like a warm and soothing blanket, a retreat from the current world. Relatively.

Book Review: Death on Tuckernuck by Francine Mathews Released on 4/7/20

2 Stars for Death on Tuckernuck by Francine Mathews.
The perfect storm is moving in on Tuckernuck. A Nor'easter is headed straight for Tuckernuck, the private island off of Nantucket where the police only set foot on it if called to a crime or accident scene.

One of the town's police officers has planned her wedding for the weekend, feeling it was the perfect time of year, historically slow and predictable for the rest of the force.

Three people are out on a yacht, one is jealous. One ends up dead. They talk about a secret, and what, "she," knows.

A man and his daughter are caretakers of the island. They make a living by seeing to the homes in the off season and during storms. They board up the homes, they carry the domestic trash off the island, and they run supplies to the residents from mainland when the island is hopping with vacationers, honeymooners, and families with a history of residence on the island.

Somewhere along the line, all of these lives are going to intersect. To be honest, I can't tell you more because by page 20, there were at LEAST 20 people introduced in the book. People on the police force, family members involved in the wedding plan, people from the island that are out of their nursing home for time on the island, the 3 people on the yacht. It went on and on. As a distracted reader right now, it's difficult for me to get consumed by books that begin this way. Give me a handful of characters at the beginning, show me their lives, shape them for me without introducing all of the people from their extended family.

Thanks to @soho_press for granting my wish to read this one. I didn't realize that Francine Mathews writes additional books that are part of this series. I think it probably is okay as a standalone for those who can follow all of the multiple characters, for me I give it 2 stars. Something was building, but by no means was I sucked in to the island or invested in the all of the people Francine was introducing me to.

Pretty Things by Janelle Brown Release Date 4/21/20

5 STARS for Pretty Things by Janelle Brown.

This was my favorite book of the year. Seriously, it was so good, you will shush your children, burn the bread, and escape to the basement to pretend match socks if it means more time to read.

This book sucked me in from the very beginning and I found myself gasping multiple times while reading it. I could sense my eyes widening as I tried to anticipate the next things to happen in the book. And, can I tell you something? Time and again, NOTHING I anticipated was right!

Janelle Brown outdid herself with the setting of Pretty Things. I found myself wrapped up in the velvet couches and heavy curtains of old money, the mansion, and the antiques inside the pages. I could smell the must holding all the secrets down dark hallways and like any good book, Janelle shows you what it means to side with all of the characters.

Do not scroll to the next review, do not app hop over to facebook to check on your friends. If you are looking for the next book to take you away from the chaos we're going through right now, head over to your favorite bookstore and order Pretty Things by Janelle Brown. Or, you could read it on your kindle, which I also recommend. Because you're going to want to read it after you've turned the lights out. The kindle will be perfect.

The book comes out Tuesday. I didn't want this one to end and hope like heck there's a movie coming soon.

Thanks to @netgalley, @randomhouse and @janellebrownie for the opportunity to read this before everyone else in exchange for an honest review. I mean, it was a real treat and I'm literally wigging out to talk to someone else who has also read it. Y'all. For real.

Book Review: The New Husband by D.J. Palmer Release Date 4/14/2020

5 Stars for The New Husband by D.J. Palmer!
This one kept me guessing, y'all.

When Nina's husband disappears and she unearths lots of secrets, she cannot believe he was living a double life. Assumed to be dead, Nina finds solace in the fact that Glen was living a double life and decides to move on. Simon comes in and sweeps her off of her feet, and they quickly move forward with moving in together and trying to start a new life. But something just doesn't seem right.

Dismissing her doubts and feelings, fearful that they are stemming the failure of her previous marriage, Nina tries to look past the gnawing feeling that something is wrong. She makes excuses for her teenagers when they have confrontations with Simon.

2 years after her father's disappearance, Nina's daughter, Maggie receives a text message but is sworn to secrecy. She must do something. Will it be enough to save Nina from a life of abuse, control, or will it lead to her death?

I found myself drawn to Maggie's friend, Ben. @djpalmerauthor, I'd love to know more about Ben's life and feel you could write another book about him.

Books are so important right now. The process of bringing books into the world seems to be more difficult than normal right now with the absence of book tours and typical authorish types of things. That being said, I recommend this book if you're looking for something fast-paced with some surprise breadcrumbs throughout. It isn't a spoiler to let you know you'll be grossed out by Simon from the very beginning.

Thanks to @netgalley @stmartinspress and @djpalmerauthor for the opportunity to read The New Husband before the rest of the world in exchange for an honest review. I wish I could convey how much I appreciate books in a time like this.

Book Review: You and Me and Us by Alison Hammer Release Date 4/7/2020

5 Stars for You and Me and Us by Alison Hammer!

I requested this book on Netgalley as something atypical of books I usually request. Most of you know I am happiest when I'm up to my earlobes in thrillers and suspense. Every few books, I like to spin the wheel and try something different.

You and Me and Us is one of those books that will set you back a bit. By that, I mean you find yourself slowly enjoying it rather than racing to the end. I'd say that if I recently lost a loved one to cancer, this book would probably wreck me in ways that only words can. On the flip side of that, Alison writes in such a way that you cannot imagine she would be able to without the story and the characters being real.

Tommy and Alexis are in their middle years, raising a teenage daughter and dealing with the juggling work, careers, life, and love like so many of us. Working late hours and rushing around to extra curricular activities and family obligations while trying to give ourselves 100% for work is a battle I relate to in a profound way. A terminal cancer diagnosis forces them to focus on what matters and deal the best they can with the time they have left.

I kept all of my emotions in check until the end, of course. I found myself openly weeping while cooking dinner at the inevitable ending. I highly recommend this one. I think Alison does a phenomenal job of communicating such powerful messages and experiences in so few pages. Unfortunately, death is one of those evergreen fabrics that weaves itself into the threads of all of our lives. I feel like I met some realistic characters and was deeply touched by the lives of Tommy, Alexis, and CeCe.

Thank you to @Netgalley, @harpercollins and @thishammer for the opportunity to get my hands on this one before the rest of the world. I think we're all a little more sensitive these days, it's the perfect time to read such a thought-provoking and lovely book. #readgoodbooks #5stars #bookreview #bookblog #bookstagram #readtoescape #coronareading #netgalley #harpercollins #readgoodbooks #loveawriter #readingismyjam #passionatelyread #lookingforareadingpartner #booksconnectus #readtoconnect #stayhomeandread

You Don't Know Me by Sara Foster Release Date 3/31/20

4 Stars for You Don't Know Me by Sara Foster!

Happy Release Day to You Don't Know Me!

This was the first book I've read by Sara Foster so I wasn't aware how strong her descriptions and character development are. A bit slow for me in the middle, but the end was like a grand finale fireworks presentation, saving all the gusto and bang for the last bit of the book.

In the face of tragedy, suspense, and mystery, a profound love story exists. Pulled together by pasts peppered with secrets, doubts, and guilt, Noah and Alice fall in love when they are both escaping on vacation from their "normal," lives. When vacation is over and they must return to what they walked away from, everything they know and believe to be true will be tested.

This book kept me guessing until the very end. I felt very attached to Noah and wanted him to be the good guy when the final page was turned.

A great distraction, intense, and worthy of a great recommendation from me, thank you @Netgalley @blackstonepublishing and @sarafosterauthor for a great read before the rest of the world gets their hands on it. #booksforcorona #bookstoescape #bookstoread #4stars #bookreview #bookblog #sendmebooks #booklover #booknerd #bookedlunch #stayuplatetoread #releaseday #suspenseful #pageturner #lookinabook #blackstonepublishing #netgalley

Book Review: The Way Life Should Be by Christina Baker Kline

5 STARS for The Way Life Should Be by Christina Baker Kline!

I picked this treasure up at my favorite local used bookstore prior to all of the shutting down of my favorite places. I needed something a little different than my usual doom, gloom, suspense. This book was EXACTLY what I needed right now.

It's about a young woman who leaves home basically for a guy (although she never wanted to admit this) she meets online. Of course, he turns out to be a complete flop but she doesn't realize that until she has already packed her boxes and moved out of the home she shared with her dad, stepmother, and grandmother.

Angela feels stuck in Maine after losing her job. The disappointments continue as she leaves, "MaineCatch." She starts working at a warm, cozy, little coffee shop in Maine and develops so many great relationships, that she begins to find out who she really is. Weaving recipes, advice, and the "gift," from her Italian grandmother for cooking, Christina Baker Kline creates a cast of characters in a dreamy setting that seems safe, untouched, and warm.

This book (and the fantastic recipes) was a retreat for me. So much so, that I ordered used copies of all her other books online in one sitting. The descriptions of the scenery with their quirky characters made me feel like I was smack dab in the middle of this story with Angela. I smelled the fresh baked goodies and the garlic and onions being sauteed for dinner.

Such a gem! I highly recommend this one for an easy, lighthearted escape from reality. I feel like I left a part of my heart in Maine and I'm looking forward to reading Christina's other books when they arrive. @bakerkline

Book Review: Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel Released in 2014

5 STARS for Station Eleven!

I read Station Eleven for my neighborhood book club. It was recommended by a member of the club over a month ago and available from our library as a book club kit. At the time the decision was made to read it, the COVID-19 outbreak was just becoming a concern in the United States, as we were seeing what it was doing to China and I believe at this point, had only a few confirmed cases in the US.

Additionally, at the time the book was selected to be read, toilet paper was still widely available, as were paper towels, bread, and rice. Libraries were still open and had normal hours, as were grocery stores. All of our children were still going to school, able to go to the playground. Field trips were planned and paid for, and national parks were open for adventures and dreaming. Also when this book was selected, date night was something that included options to go see a movie, barhop, or have dinner away from home. Now, bars and restaurants are closed and only at this time offering take-out or delivery options. Movie theaters are empty. There are talks of curfews and "shelter in place," as well as limitations on visiting with friends and family. Currently, no one should be in groups of more than ten people and NO ONE can visit a nursing home or assisted living facility. No one.

Probably for reasons similar to why I gave Handmaid's Tale and The Testaments both 5 stars, Station Eleven follows right behind with a chilling and unreal account that 30 days ago, none of us could have really thought would be possible in the US.

When I finished the last page, I just sat. Numb. How could I review this book? How was this written with such clarity and almost prophetic significance? Where did Emily Mandel come up with this? Was it a dream that she woke up and feverishly felt she had to get down on paper? Was it a fear? Had she read something about the Spanish Flu and was inspired and driven to tell a story about how our present world could turn upside down if something similar were to attack the world?

I found one of the most beautiful things that Emily uses is her gift of drawing life and death so intricately with her words. She describes such destruction with bleak depth about things such as imploding structures and burnt out old buildings and then turns right around and will describe the flowers growing out of the cracks in the concrete. She does that time and again. My book is marked up from one end to the other and I found this element so beautiful throughout the book.

When the Georgia Flu strikes, airplanes are grounded, the internet is non-existent. Power is lost. Very few are able to remember the hum of the air-conditioner, the coldness of the refrigerator, what happens when you flip the light switch when walking into a room. Few remember TV shows, magazines, and warm or cold water coming out of the faucet. Because all of the workers making all of those technological advances function became sick, could no longer work.

I had literally 30 pages left and it took me a very long time to finish those 30 pages because I wasn't confident that the tides were going to turn, that the book would end nicely. That I would be relieved, hopeful, or feel humanity is not destined to walk down this same path due to some of the same circumstances outlined in this book. Some of which are very real and palpable right now. But, I did finish it. And, highly recommend it regardless of which side of the doomsday prepping scale you find yourself on.

Book Review: Please See Us by Caitlin Mullen Release Date 3/3/2020

5 Stars for Please See Us!
My 5 star book spree continues!!

I had to find time to myself today to finish this book. I couldn't take the interruptions any longer. So, I did what any bookworm like myself would do on a sunny day in NC. I found 2 trees and hid in the hammock for a few hours.

Please See Us is Caitlin Mullen's first book and I think I can speak for the collective "we," when I say those of us who have been lucky enough to read Please See Us are already waiting for her next book.

Atlantic City has had it's ups and downs over the years as business comes and goes with the casinos. Entire groups of people work to support the tourists that come and go from the casinos. One girl is coming of age in the thick of it. Raised by her aunt, trying to save up any money she can get, Clara discovers that reading tarot cards is not her only ability.

When a man walks in and asks for Clara's help with his missing niece, she cannot stop seeing visions and from then on, Caitlin Mullen walks us through the lives of the missing women and the ways their lives turn upside down before ending up in the marsh. Which women will be next? Who will believe her? Will she be next?

Gripping, nail-biting, and smelly, Caitlin does an impeccable job linking all of the characters in a way that seems logical and so easy to believe. You'll be so immersed with this book, you will itch and your skin crawl as you rush to the end, hoping the girls are seen before another one ends up in the line.

This book comes out in 2 days. If you're looking for something a bit different with a few unexpected twists that you won't be able to put down, this book is the one for you!

Thank you to @GalleryBooks and @Simonschuster for providing me with an advanced reader's copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.  @bonnieandglyde @caitlin_e_mullen #PleaseSeeUs #atlanticcity #marshgirls #scary #casinolife #tarotcards #thriller #5stars #springread
