Book Review: 28 Summers by Elin Hilderbrand

Well, another 5 star review for you. Maybe you should just be thankful I'm finding all of the good ones for you, okay? 28 Summers by @ElinHilderbrand was my first Elin novel. YES, REALLY. I like to interrupt my thriller streaks from time to time and the beautiful cover and description sucked me right in at Target last weekend. I read this book in 2 days. And it's a whopper.

28 Summers isn't a "love story," okay? It isn't all rose petals and picnics on the beach.  This book shines a light on how easy it is for the characters to lead a life they are "supposed to," lead versus the life that they want. Years pass by and before any of the main characters know it, they've all grown up and settled down, had children, and accepted their lives for what they are. I found this book very thought-provoking and beautifully written.

Thank you to @ElinHilderbrand for providing the perfect getaway book to Nantucket when we're all forced to stay here right here.

I've already scored a few of her other books and you can bet that as soon as the frost is on the pumpkin, I'm going to be diving into her winter series and praying for a snowstorm.

Book Review: Lock Every Door by Riley Sager

I'm on a roll with 5 star ratings right now. I know it, okay. I could chalk it up to luck, to a whizbang bookstagram community, or to just reader's luck.

Lock Every Door was my second Riley Sager book. After reading Home Before Dark, I was craving more of Riley's writing. Lock Every Door didn't disappoint and may have been my favorite of the two.

Set in New York, the Bartholomew is a dream setting for this thriller. The description of the building itself is so remarkable, I felt like I was there with Jules in her apartment. I was fascinated with the life, times, and secrets within the walls of the Bartholomew.

Something mysterious and dark is going on within the walls of the Bartholomew, and Riley kept my heart racing from page one. With about 50 pages left, I had to retreat to my bedroom closet to finish this one without interruptions. I never saw the ending coming and didn't know who to trust in the book!

Riley Sager is my new Ruth Ware. I'll be waiting in line when his next release comes out. I still have Final Girls of his to read but may space it out a bit to savor....

Book Review: A Million Junes by Emily Henry

5 Stars for A Million Junes by Emily Henry! Yes, 5 STARS! After reading Beach Read, Emily's most recent book, I craved more of her writing. A Million Junes was WAY different and hooked me in the way I haven't been hooked by a book in quite a while.

A Million Junes is magical in that Twilight way at the beginning. Look, I mean that in the very best way. It's magical, mythical, and full of symbolism. Light meets the dark, Earth meets the Heavens, and star-crossed lovers meet the fate they have been destined for. You will become entangled in the roots of a Million Junes.

I was holding my breath with the turn of every page while I had to just sit and read about the main characters do all of the things their families have been forbidden from doing for generations.

A Million Junes is a push and a pull. It's an ebb and flow. It's so real you could touch it, and make believe. It's made up of Memories and loss, of finding love and coming home. It's equal parts desperation and devastation. And, it's completely lovely.

I read this book in 2 days. Meaning, I STARTED it yesterday. You are overdue for A Million Junes. You can thank me later!

Book Review: Home Before Dark by Riley Sager

Thankfully, I have found another 5 star read. I am so glad. I didn't get to start this one right away, once I received it from Book Of the Month club, as I was in the middle of a few running books. This is the first thriller I've read in a bit and it was GREAT!

If you're looking for spooky, skin-crawling, mystery...this one has all of those things. Also, it's important to note that there were quite a few BIG twists at the end. And, you know I love a twist. I finished this one by the pool and was so thankful to have some quiet time to sop up the last few pages.

This was the first book I've read by Riley Sager, I'll have to keep my eyes open for Riley's others, as I've heard they're all great.

Book Review: Girls of Summer by Nancy Thayer New Release May 2020

5 Stars for Girls of Summer by @nancythayerbooks!

I've been on a roll again with good books. This one didn't disappoint and is another summer beach read that I high recommend if you're looking for something easy-going and offering to take you away.
Set on the island of Nantucket, you can practically see the cedar siding houses, bright blue hydrangeas, and feel the slower pace of life with each flipping of the page.

This book has a great ending, all bundled up nicely. It begs for you to pack a bag with linen pants and a hoodie and head on up to Nantucket. I fell in love with the imagery, the quaint setting, and the characters.

Looking for a book to carry with you on the long roadtrip to the beach? How about one to read while you have to stay where you are? This one is it.

Dear Netgalley, please don't disown me because I have not addressed my approved books in awhile. I purchased this book the first time I stepped inside my local bookstore since the town reopened and I needed it. That's the thing about books, they wait....

Book Review: Running Home by Katie Arnold

5 Stars for Running Home by Katie Arnold!

This book was beautifully written. I'm on a running book kick right now and this book was a treat! I found myself completely immersed in this sweet book Katie wrote about her life, and the whole left in her hole and spirit after the death of her father.

You will laugh, you will cry. You'll highlight and star paragraphs that you'll want to come back to later. This one deserves a spot on every runner's bookshelf. As a newbie to running, I was fascinated by Katie's drive for ultramarathon running and her ability to transcend the pain and trials she faced. The best part about this book though is that it doesn't matter if you are a novice who runs/walks or someone who is a competitive runner, you will be able to relate to the whys of running.

I was blown away by the imagery and descriptions Katie used to describe the settings she runs in and the memories she had from childhood. Also, because of Katie, Santa Fe is on my "must visit," list of places to see.

Book Review: 401 by Ben Smith

4 STARS for 401 by Ben Smith!
Ben Smith tells an amazing underdog story with 401. He ran 401 marathons in 401 days. Yeah. Really.
A book about turning the troubles and emotional baggage from your past into fuel for good, 401 is a great albeit atypical, coming of age story.

I'm currently on a "running book," phase. As a new runner, I can't get my hands on enough documentation about running. Common themes that I read about the lives of runners I see in myself, which reminds me when I'm not running that I have what it takes to run.

Ben's story is remarkable. He says over and over that he's just an ordinary guy. But, he is doing extraordinary things and making a difference 1 person, 1 reader, 1 runner at a time. He sold all of his possessions in order to have the money he needed to hit the road. And, all the money he raises goes towards anti-bullying organizations.

I loved this book, and it will remain on my shelf as a beacon of hope, light, and encouragement when I need it. If you're at the beginning, I think you'll find a voice that resonates with you as well.

Next up, Running Home by Katie Arnold.

Book Review: Mile Markers by Kristin Armstrong

4 STARS for MILE MARKERS by Kristin Armstrong. Most of you know, the only thing that I give up my sacred reading time for is now running. I used to run in college and have been on a hiatus for (shhh) 15 years now. I finally got sick enough of myself and my excuses to hit the pavement again. And, I needed some MAJOR motivation.

I wondered what it is that runners tell themselves when they don't want to show up. What do they do to increase their endurance? What shoes do they love? What about that stitch in my right ribcage that isn't allowing me to take a deep breath?

I found Kristin's book on a running blog, along with a few others that I'm diving into- feet first. I think this one was a good one to start with, although I didn't get much insight into the hows and whats, I did come away with some nuggets and have been able to see how my running frame of mind is spilling over into my daily life.

The book reads like a bundle of articles, journal entries, or nuggets. It's a bit all over the place, but that was okay because most of the time lately my attention span for reading has been zilch nada.

Next up on my list is 401 by Ben Smith. The man who ran 401 marathons in 401 days and changed his life forever. I'll be starting it tonight and hope to be finished with it in a few days and also, forever changed.

Any running readers out there? What books have had an impact on your growth?

Cheers to all of you!

Book Review: Beach Read by Emily Henry

A very happy 5 STARS for Beach Read by @emilyhenrywrites! As I've shared many times in the last month, I've just been struggling to get into anything. Like most of you, reading is my JAM, my therapy, my noise cut-off-er. When this one arrived in the beautiful royal blue @bookofthemonth box, I was excited for many reasons.

I immediately fell in love with January Andrews. First of all, what's not to love about the name January? Then, when I found out she was a writer, going through some pretty heavy things, in her father's "secret," beach house, I was sucked in.

Enter Gus. What a dreamboat! Neighbor at the beach house. Also a writer. jaded.

This book was everything I needed. I found myself not picking it up if I didn't have big blocks of time to devour it. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll melt, you'll sizzle. Summer reading doesn't get much better than this, folks. Book Review: Untamed by Glennon Doyle Release Date 3/10/2020

5 Stars for Untamed by Glennon Doyle!

I had this one on the shelf waiting for a little over a month. I heard so much about it and felt a little hesitant after I loved Love Warrior and then shortly after heard about her divorce and relationship with Abby because it felt like everything I loved about her may all be a lie.

That wasn't the case. I could relate to so much of how her life changed and she could no longer live the life she had tried so desperately to fit back into. I could relate to her questions about everything she had been told. I found that I highlighted practically half the book.

This book is what the world needs right now. And, I hope if you're on the fence about picking it up like I was, that you'll keep turning the pages like I did. I think you'll come out better on the other side.

I wish I could thank someone @netgalley or @randomhouse for an advanced reader's copy of this book. But, I am solely responsible for picking it up all by myself and feeling there could be something inside just for me. And you. Thanks @glennondoyle for this treasure!

Book Review: Rules for Moving by Nancy Star Release Date 5/19/20

3 Stars for Rules for Moving out 5/19/20.
As an advice columnist, Lane likes to retreat in the lives of her readers. When tragedy strikes, she realizes she can no longer hide away in her work and continue to ignore the issues in her life that need to be addressed.

Nancy Star takes us on a journey with Lane and her son as they deal with circumstances most of us cannot imagine. Picking things up and starting over doesn't fix everything, as it seemed to do when Lane was growing up.

I gave this one 3 stars because it was a relatively easy read but it just didn't grab me. It seemed predictable, besides at the very beginning and I kept waiting for things to turn. But, that could just be the thriller/suspense lover in me.

The character development was so-so. I felt like I could understand Lane and even her son, Henry. My heart went out to her in the very beginning and I rallied for her. From a literary sense though, I didn't feel like I was committed to seeing them through and wasn't surprised with how things turned out in the end.

Thank you to Lake Union Publishing and Netgalley for the chance to dive into Rules for Moving before everyone else. I am so thankful to have an abundance of books during this trying time, to keep me busy and allow me to escape.

Book Review: Joy Comes in the Morning by Betty Smith Released in 1963

4 STARS for Joy in the Morning by Betty Smith. Now that I have finished all of her books  it will be interesting to see how easy it is for me to crack open my my typical Netgalley reads. I did order Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, and Homeward Angel by Thomas Wolfe. I figure they have waited years and years for me to read them, they can wait a bit longer while I catch up on some ARCs.

Book Review: Tomorrow Will Be Better by Betty Smith Originally Released 1948

5 Stars for Tomorrow Will Be Better by Betty Smith.
I finished Betty Smith's other book, Maggie-Now earlier in the week. Desperate to get my hands on more of her writing, I went right to Tomorrow Will Be Better. It didn't disappoint and had so many parallels and similar threads as Maggie-Now and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.

Betty Smith's writing has become a haven for me. I remember what it was like to be a poor child, rich in the love department. I very much feel myself as a character in one of her books. I remember what it was like to have one heat source in the house, no running water, and to put plastic over the windows in the winter to keep the cold out.

I feel that Betty Smith writes so effortlessly and honestly because she writes about the life that she knew, growing up in Brooklyn. The most interesting thing she consistently writes is the way her characters are so completely moved, broken, and empathetic. Yet, they don't communicate it to one another. She often writes about how a character will want to say something or be about to say something, usually in order to show affection or give praise, and then they decide against it. It's so unfortunate and I think that lots of people are the same today. For many of the same reasons.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about the books of hers I have read. They are different. They are profound. They are coming of age and heart-wrenching. I highly recommend them.

Book Review: Maggie- Now by Betty Smith Released in 1958

4 STARS for Maggie- Now by Betty Smith. Reading A Tree Grows in Brooklyn earlier this year has continued to sit with me. I have moved on and read more typical books of mine, thrillers, mysteries, suspense mostly all new releases. I haven't been able to stop thinking about A Tree Grows Up in Brooklyn. During these challenging and foreign times, I find solace in the way she wrote about Brooklyn and the characters she developed in the middle of poverty.

After giving up on my neighborhood book club selection this month because I couldn't focus and keep track of the characters, I also closed an ARC I received from Netgalley for the same reason. I want to tell everyone, "it's not you, it's me." So, I reached for more of Betty Smith. Hopeful. Dreaming she would be able to transport me back to the streets of Brooklyn and introduce me to new characters in a similar way.

I gave Maggie-Now 4 stars because at the beginning, the story starts with an Irish immigrant. I had a hard time knowing where it was heading and wondering if the entire book was going to have "me," instead of, "my" when the characters were talking. I continued to long for Brooklyn, not Ireland. And then, BAM! He moved to the US. And, once again, Betty Smith held my heart and eyeballs for 2 days straight every break, meal, and post-kid bedtime minute I could get.

I also have Joy Comes in The Morning and Tomorrow Will Be Better by Betty Smith. I'm thinking of neglecting my TBR list for a bit. And, getting back to good. It's such different writing that I typically read. And, certainly a different type of suspense and grip. All that said, let me just say, "it isn't you, it's me," as I continue to look for literature that is like a warm and soothing blanket, a retreat from the current world. Relatively.

Book Review: Death on Tuckernuck by Francine Mathews Released on 4/7/20

2 Stars for Death on Tuckernuck by Francine Mathews.
The perfect storm is moving in on Tuckernuck. A Nor'easter is headed straight for Tuckernuck, the private island off of Nantucket where the police only set foot on it if called to a crime or accident scene.

One of the town's police officers has planned her wedding for the weekend, feeling it was the perfect time of year, historically slow and predictable for the rest of the force.

Three people are out on a yacht, one is jealous. One ends up dead. They talk about a secret, and what, "she," knows.

A man and his daughter are caretakers of the island. They make a living by seeing to the homes in the off season and during storms. They board up the homes, they carry the domestic trash off the island, and they run supplies to the residents from mainland when the island is hopping with vacationers, honeymooners, and families with a history of residence on the island.

Somewhere along the line, all of these lives are going to intersect. To be honest, I can't tell you more because by page 20, there were at LEAST 20 people introduced in the book. People on the police force, family members involved in the wedding plan, people from the island that are out of their nursing home for time on the island, the 3 people on the yacht. It went on and on. As a distracted reader right now, it's difficult for me to get consumed by books that begin this way. Give me a handful of characters at the beginning, show me their lives, shape them for me without introducing all of the people from their extended family.

Thanks to @soho_press for granting my wish to read this one. I didn't realize that Francine Mathews writes additional books that are part of this series. I think it probably is okay as a standalone for those who can follow all of the multiple characters, for me I give it 2 stars. Something was building, but by no means was I sucked in to the island or invested in the all of the people Francine was introducing me to.

Pretty Things by Janelle Brown Release Date 4/21/20

5 STARS for Pretty Things by Janelle Brown.

This was my favorite book of the year. Seriously, it was so good, you will shush your children, burn the bread, and escape to the basement to pretend match socks if it means more time to read.

This book sucked me in from the very beginning and I found myself gasping multiple times while reading it. I could sense my eyes widening as I tried to anticipate the next things to happen in the book. And, can I tell you something? Time and again, NOTHING I anticipated was right!

Janelle Brown outdid herself with the setting of Pretty Things. I found myself wrapped up in the velvet couches and heavy curtains of old money, the mansion, and the antiques inside the pages. I could smell the must holding all the secrets down dark hallways and like any good book, Janelle shows you what it means to side with all of the characters.

Do not scroll to the next review, do not app hop over to facebook to check on your friends. If you are looking for the next book to take you away from the chaos we're going through right now, head over to your favorite bookstore and order Pretty Things by Janelle Brown. Or, you could read it on your kindle, which I also recommend. Because you're going to want to read it after you've turned the lights out. The kindle will be perfect.

The book comes out Tuesday. I didn't want this one to end and hope like heck there's a movie coming soon.

Thanks to @netgalley, @randomhouse and @janellebrownie for the opportunity to read this before everyone else in exchange for an honest review. I mean, it was a real treat and I'm literally wigging out to talk to someone else who has also read it. Y'all. For real.

Book Review: The New Husband by D.J. Palmer Release Date 4/14/2020

5 Stars for The New Husband by D.J. Palmer!
This one kept me guessing, y'all.

When Nina's husband disappears and she unearths lots of secrets, she cannot believe he was living a double life. Assumed to be dead, Nina finds solace in the fact that Glen was living a double life and decides to move on. Simon comes in and sweeps her off of her feet, and they quickly move forward with moving in together and trying to start a new life. But something just doesn't seem right.

Dismissing her doubts and feelings, fearful that they are stemming the failure of her previous marriage, Nina tries to look past the gnawing feeling that something is wrong. She makes excuses for her teenagers when they have confrontations with Simon.

2 years after her father's disappearance, Nina's daughter, Maggie receives a text message but is sworn to secrecy. She must do something. Will it be enough to save Nina from a life of abuse, control, or will it lead to her death?

I found myself drawn to Maggie's friend, Ben. @djpalmerauthor, I'd love to know more about Ben's life and feel you could write another book about him.

Books are so important right now. The process of bringing books into the world seems to be more difficult than normal right now with the absence of book tours and typical authorish types of things. That being said, I recommend this book if you're looking for something fast-paced with some surprise breadcrumbs throughout. It isn't a spoiler to let you know you'll be grossed out by Simon from the very beginning.

Thanks to @netgalley @stmartinspress and @djpalmerauthor for the opportunity to read The New Husband before the rest of the world in exchange for an honest review. I wish I could convey how much I appreciate books in a time like this.

Book Review: You and Me and Us by Alison Hammer Release Date 4/7/2020

5 Stars for You and Me and Us by Alison Hammer!

I requested this book on Netgalley as something atypical of books I usually request. Most of you know I am happiest when I'm up to my earlobes in thrillers and suspense. Every few books, I like to spin the wheel and try something different.

You and Me and Us is one of those books that will set you back a bit. By that, I mean you find yourself slowly enjoying it rather than racing to the end. I'd say that if I recently lost a loved one to cancer, this book would probably wreck me in ways that only words can. On the flip side of that, Alison writes in such a way that you cannot imagine she would be able to without the story and the characters being real.

Tommy and Alexis are in their middle years, raising a teenage daughter and dealing with the juggling work, careers, life, and love like so many of us. Working late hours and rushing around to extra curricular activities and family obligations while trying to give ourselves 100% for work is a battle I relate to in a profound way. A terminal cancer diagnosis forces them to focus on what matters and deal the best they can with the time they have left.

I kept all of my emotions in check until the end, of course. I found myself openly weeping while cooking dinner at the inevitable ending. I highly recommend this one. I think Alison does a phenomenal job of communicating such powerful messages and experiences in so few pages. Unfortunately, death is one of those evergreen fabrics that weaves itself into the threads of all of our lives. I feel like I met some realistic characters and was deeply touched by the lives of Tommy, Alexis, and CeCe.

Thank you to @Netgalley, @harpercollins and @thishammer for the opportunity to get my hands on this one before the rest of the world. I think we're all a little more sensitive these days, it's the perfect time to read such a thought-provoking and lovely book. #readgoodbooks #5stars #bookreview #bookblog #bookstagram #readtoescape #coronareading #netgalley #harpercollins #readgoodbooks #loveawriter #readingismyjam #passionatelyread #lookingforareadingpartner #booksconnectus #readtoconnect #stayhomeandread

You Don't Know Me by Sara Foster Release Date 3/31/20

4 Stars for You Don't Know Me by Sara Foster!

Happy Release Day to You Don't Know Me!

This was the first book I've read by Sara Foster so I wasn't aware how strong her descriptions and character development are. A bit slow for me in the middle, but the end was like a grand finale fireworks presentation, saving all the gusto and bang for the last bit of the book.

In the face of tragedy, suspense, and mystery, a profound love story exists. Pulled together by pasts peppered with secrets, doubts, and guilt, Noah and Alice fall in love when they are both escaping on vacation from their "normal," lives. When vacation is over and they must return to what they walked away from, everything they know and believe to be true will be tested.

This book kept me guessing until the very end. I felt very attached to Noah and wanted him to be the good guy when the final page was turned.

A great distraction, intense, and worthy of a great recommendation from me, thank you @Netgalley @blackstonepublishing and @sarafosterauthor for a great read before the rest of the world gets their hands on it. #booksforcorona #bookstoescape #bookstoread #4stars #bookreview #bookblog #sendmebooks #booklover #booknerd #bookedlunch #stayuplatetoread #releaseday #suspenseful #pageturner #lookinabook #blackstonepublishing #netgalley

Book Review: The Way Life Should Be by Christina Baker Kline

5 STARS for The Way Life Should Be by Christina Baker Kline!

I picked this treasure up at my favorite local used bookstore prior to all of the shutting down of my favorite places. I needed something a little different than my usual doom, gloom, suspense. This book was EXACTLY what I needed right now.

It's about a young woman who leaves home basically for a guy (although she never wanted to admit this) she meets online. Of course, he turns out to be a complete flop but she doesn't realize that until she has already packed her boxes and moved out of the home she shared with her dad, stepmother, and grandmother.

Angela feels stuck in Maine after losing her job. The disappointments continue as she leaves, "MaineCatch." She starts working at a warm, cozy, little coffee shop in Maine and develops so many great relationships, that she begins to find out who she really is. Weaving recipes, advice, and the "gift," from her Italian grandmother for cooking, Christina Baker Kline creates a cast of characters in a dreamy setting that seems safe, untouched, and warm.

This book (and the fantastic recipes) was a retreat for me. So much so, that I ordered used copies of all her other books online in one sitting. The descriptions of the scenery with their quirky characters made me feel like I was smack dab in the middle of this story with Angela. I smelled the fresh baked goodies and the garlic and onions being sauteed for dinner.

Such a gem! I highly recommend this one for an easy, lighthearted escape from reality. I feel like I left a part of my heart in Maine and I'm looking forward to reading Christina's other books when they arrive. @bakerkline

Book Review: Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel Released in 2014

5 STARS for Station Eleven!

I read Station Eleven for my neighborhood book club. It was recommended by a member of the club over a month ago and available from our library as a book club kit. At the time the decision was made to read it, the COVID-19 outbreak was just becoming a concern in the United States, as we were seeing what it was doing to China and I believe at this point, had only a few confirmed cases in the US.

Additionally, at the time the book was selected to be read, toilet paper was still widely available, as were paper towels, bread, and rice. Libraries were still open and had normal hours, as were grocery stores. All of our children were still going to school, able to go to the playground. Field trips were planned and paid for, and national parks were open for adventures and dreaming. Also when this book was selected, date night was something that included options to go see a movie, barhop, or have dinner away from home. Now, bars and restaurants are closed and only at this time offering take-out or delivery options. Movie theaters are empty. There are talks of curfews and "shelter in place," as well as limitations on visiting with friends and family. Currently, no one should be in groups of more than ten people and NO ONE can visit a nursing home or assisted living facility. No one.

Probably for reasons similar to why I gave Handmaid's Tale and The Testaments both 5 stars, Station Eleven follows right behind with a chilling and unreal account that 30 days ago, none of us could have really thought would be possible in the US.

When I finished the last page, I just sat. Numb. How could I review this book? How was this written with such clarity and almost prophetic significance? Where did Emily Mandel come up with this? Was it a dream that she woke up and feverishly felt she had to get down on paper? Was it a fear? Had she read something about the Spanish Flu and was inspired and driven to tell a story about how our present world could turn upside down if something similar were to attack the world?

I found one of the most beautiful things that Emily uses is her gift of drawing life and death so intricately with her words. She describes such destruction with bleak depth about things such as imploding structures and burnt out old buildings and then turns right around and will describe the flowers growing out of the cracks in the concrete. She does that time and again. My book is marked up from one end to the other and I found this element so beautiful throughout the book.

When the Georgia Flu strikes, airplanes are grounded, the internet is non-existent. Power is lost. Very few are able to remember the hum of the air-conditioner, the coldness of the refrigerator, what happens when you flip the light switch when walking into a room. Few remember TV shows, magazines, and warm or cold water coming out of the faucet. Because all of the workers making all of those technological advances function became sick, could no longer work.

I had literally 30 pages left and it took me a very long time to finish those 30 pages because I wasn't confident that the tides were going to turn, that the book would end nicely. That I would be relieved, hopeful, or feel humanity is not destined to walk down this same path due to some of the same circumstances outlined in this book. Some of which are very real and palpable right now. But, I did finish it. And, highly recommend it regardless of which side of the doomsday prepping scale you find yourself on.

Book Review: Please See Us by Caitlin Mullen Release Date 3/3/2020

5 Stars for Please See Us!
My 5 star book spree continues!!

I had to find time to myself today to finish this book. I couldn't take the interruptions any longer. So, I did what any bookworm like myself would do on a sunny day in NC. I found 2 trees and hid in the hammock for a few hours.

Please See Us is Caitlin Mullen's first book and I think I can speak for the collective "we," when I say those of us who have been lucky enough to read Please See Us are already waiting for her next book.

Atlantic City has had it's ups and downs over the years as business comes and goes with the casinos. Entire groups of people work to support the tourists that come and go from the casinos. One girl is coming of age in the thick of it. Raised by her aunt, trying to save up any money she can get, Clara discovers that reading tarot cards is not her only ability.

When a man walks in and asks for Clara's help with his missing niece, she cannot stop seeing visions and from then on, Caitlin Mullen walks us through the lives of the missing women and the ways their lives turn upside down before ending up in the marsh. Which women will be next? Who will believe her? Will she be next?

Gripping, nail-biting, and smelly, Caitlin does an impeccable job linking all of the characters in a way that seems logical and so easy to believe. You'll be so immersed with this book, you will itch and your skin crawl as you rush to the end, hoping the girls are seen before another one ends up in the line.

This book comes out in 2 days. If you're looking for something a bit different with a few unexpected twists that you won't be able to put down, this book is the one for you!

Thank you to @GalleryBooks and @Simonschuster for providing me with an advanced reader's copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.  @bonnieandglyde @caitlin_e_mullen #PleaseSeeUs #atlanticcity #marshgirls #scary #casinolife #tarotcards #thriller #5stars #springread

Book Review: Decoding Boys by Cara Natterson Release Date 2/11/20

5 Stars for Decoding Boys by Cara Natterson! Not my typical book genre, Decoding Boys is a book for moms of boys. Cara covers uncomfortable (at least for me) territory that addresses the concerns a lot of moms face today when it comes to understanding their boys.

Cara Natterson uses her experiences as a pediatrician and mom to shed some light on physiologically what is going on in the pubescent and pre-pubescent boys in our lives. She clears up some misinformation and dives right into what we can do and say when it comes to peer pressure, social media, delayed development, early development, and (gasp) PORN. OMG. Middle school? Yes.

Cara provides shocking statistics that will reinforce the importance of arming yourself with education and talking points so that you at least feel informed before talking to your boy(s). She urges us to talk to them because they are talking to others at school, seeing things on the internet, and regardless of how much we try to shelter them, they have real questions and need to know they can ask.

As a mom of boys, I feel more equipped and less naive after reading this book. It's difficult to know what to do all of the time, in such a changing and information-open world.

Thought-provoking and a bit scary, this book is definitely informative and offers suggestions and recommendations that will help when the time comes to talk about the hard things.

Thank you to @netgalley and @randomhouse #netgalley #randomhouse #ballantinebooks for the opportunity to read this book #decodingboys before the rest of the world in exchange for an honest review. I'll definitely be needing it over the next few years! #bookreview #5stars #nonfiction #boymomhelp #readgoodbooks #readtoknow #informedmom #getsmart

Book Review: Ten Days Gone by Beverly Long Release Date 2/18/2020

I'm on a roll here lately. I'd like to think that I'm skeptical and sometimes a hard-to-please reader. But, I am on a 5 star book run and I cannot think of a better way to start out 2020!

5 stars for Ten Days Gone by Beverly Long! I don't typically like thrillers written from a PI or law enforcement point of view. This one was an exception for me and I felt I was watching the next Liam Neeson movie unfold one development at a time.

Two detectives are on a tight timeline in a small town. Every ten days, another woman is found dead in their homes with no signs of struggle or forced entry. The clock is ticking and time is running out. How many more women will have to die before the murderer is found?

Fast-paced and gripping, Ten Days Gone is a supercharged thriller. Packed with suspense and mystery, it is sure to be one of your favorites of 2020.

Thank you to @netgalley and @harlequinbooks for an advanced copy of Ten Days Gone in exchange for an honest review. Book Review: The Other Mrs. by Mary Kubica Release Date 2/18/20

5 stars for The Other Mrs. by Mary Kubica!
I had this one on my TBR list for quite some time. You and I both know how it is to get approved for a favorite author. It feels like you're in on a secret the rest of the world doesn't know about yet.

The Other Mrs. by Mary Kubica was suspenseful and gutsy. I read past my bedtime 2 nights for this one, and it did not disappoint.

Sadie and Will move to Maine to, "start over." He inherits a house and his niece and it seems to be the perfect time because things in Chicago were quickly unraveling for Sadie, Will, and their two boys. Hesitant to move, but with no other options, Sadie gives it her best shot. When the woman across the street is murdered, the questions start.

I immediately was so skeptical of all the characters in the book. I didn't know who to believe and in my opinion, everyone had a motive.

In classic Kubica style, the turns and roller coaster dips and dives got more and more drastic as the story unfolded. Happy to recommend this one. It was dark, snowy, shadowy, and full of jumps!

Thank you to @harlequinbooks and @parkrowbooks for collaborating with @netgalley to provide me with this amazing read. @marykubica, putting that scary teenage girl at the front of the story really made for quite an adventure and lots of questions. I think people are going to line up to buy this one! #5stars #bookreview #newrelease #booklover #bibliophile #bookstagram #lovetoread #sendmebooks #booknerd #readforfun #suspense #thriller #mystery #pageturner #onemorechapter #readmorebooks #supportauthors #booksandcoffee

Book Review: Wildland by Rebecca Hodge Release Date 2/11/2020

5 stars for Wildland by Rebecca Hodge!

Years after undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, a double mastectomy and implants, Kat is faced with a new lump and big decisions. She retreats to the Blue Ridge Mountains for some alone time away from her daughter, her family, and the noise of life. Kat wants to be able to think about what exactly it is that she wants to do with the rest of her life, and she doesn't think she has the strength to spend the time she has left nauseated, bald, and running back and forth from one doctor's appointment to the next. Her daughter feels like she is giving up.

I finished this book in 2 days. Wildland reminded me of why it is that I love to read. It had a different mix of the usual elements I love. Kat is dealing with something that so many women we all love and know are faced with and fear. Breast cancer. Immediately, I was drawn to her story and her character. But, don't write this book off as a sappy novel. It takes a turn quickly and before you know it, the suspense is in full force and Kat's breast cancer diagnosis becomes secondary to what she must survive.

Growing up in NC, this book is rich with imagery that I appreciated. I'm lucky enough to have spent time in the very same Blue Ridge Mountains that Rebecca Hodge describes so perfectly. This book will appeal to all of your senses and you'll appreciate how random strangers pull together when it matters most. I didn't want this one to end.

Thank you to @netgalley and @crookedlanebooks for the opportunity to read this one before everyone else. And, @rhodge.fiction I hope this book soars. Book Review: A Tree Grows In Brooklyn by Betty Smith

5 Stars for A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. I've been meaning to read this gem for quite some time. Set in the early 1900s, Brooklyn, this book was a true treasure. I thought that I had previously read the book when I was younger, either because it was required or because as a pre-teen and teen, I wasn't allowed to do much and read everything at that time I could get my hands on.

As I do when I read most books, I highlighted parts that were especially beautiful to me. At least every other page has some evidence of meaning to me, which is pretty significant considering there are 498 pages in the version I read.

I don't know if I can put my finger on the one thing that I loved the most about the book. If I had to identify one thing that resonated the most with me, I'd say it was the way Betty Smith wrote about the differences among different classes of people. The way she painted her life, and what it meant growing up and coming of age in Brooklyn being poor was really moving. She wove that thread throughout the entire book and a lot of her upbringing and coming of age I could relate to.

I also really loved the way that she focused on the impact of education and the perseverance, grit, and ability to find happiness despite the cards life dealt to the Nolan family.

It's interesting and humbling to think about how different life is now than it was then. The things and luxuries that we take for granted are pivotal to think about when reading this book.

I'm not sure there are books written this way anymore. And, it's a shame. I found A Tree Grows in Brooklyn to be refreshing and thought-provoking. Times in the book were so difficult and people had so much less. This book will remain high on my list of most adored books. If you haven't read it, I highly suggest it.  #atreegrowsinbrooklyn #brooklynbooks #loveabook #historicny #comingofage #5stars #bookreview #permabound #usedbook #booknerd #bookaholic #bookish #weekendwasbooked #booklover #classic #top10 #greatbook #bettysmith #readnext #maketimeforthingsyouenjoy #grit

Book Review: Out of Africa by Isak Dinesen

3 stars for Out of Africa by Isak Dinesen. I read this book for my neighborhood book club. I went back and forth about how many stars I would give this book for quite a bit. It wasn't something I would normally read and I kept waiting for it to play out like most novels that I read with a twist or lost love. I kept thinking that a knight in shining armor would show up.

That being said, the prose and level of artistry Dinesen demonstrates in Out of Africa is eloquent and beautiful. Isak Dinesen wrote this book about her time and experiences running a coffee plantation in Africa. She describes people that cross her path with such depth, it's unlike anything you will probably ever read. In addition to her words describing the characters from their skin, appearances, and words, she is able to dig into the depths of them and talk about their souls.

What I loved the most about her writing was the way she personified everything from trees and plants to fish, streams, and the wind. She exemplifies breathing life into the setting, and as the reader, it's easy to believe and feel that the farm is very much alive.

On the other hand, I felt that the story skipped around a lot and I had a hard time making sense of how she ended up on the farm and the circumstances surrounding her husband. She left Africa many times, and it wasn't ever clear to me why she left, who she was visiting, and I felt like I kept waiting and waiting for that clarification.

I gave this book a 3 based on my love of the actual descriptions and artistry with the words themselves. As far as having a beginning, middle, and end or anything that hooked me, I felt the book came up short. I couldn't give it more than a 3 and I couldn't say it was an awful book. I've heard there's also a movie, and perhaps it did a better job of showing the story or having a hook.

Good Girls Lie by J.T. Ellison Release Date 12/30/19

5 Stars for Good Girls Lie by J.T. Ellison! Being a fan of J.T. Ellison, I've been looking forward to reading this one since I caught wind that it was coming out months and months ago. Knowing the release date was 12/30, I wanted to make sure I could fit it in as one of my last books of the year and J.T. Ellison didn't disappoint!

Set in the Blue Ridge Mountains, I could easily see the imagery and understood the pros and cons of attending Goode School. Landlocked, tucked away, sheltered, trapped...all characteristics of the school as well as the main characters. Ellison uses her skill to build one mystery after another, making Good Girls Lie impossible to put down.

Goode School is elite, private, and the girls who graduate from there are the cream of the crop, on a path to any Ivy League School of their choice. Traditions and alliances run deep and a lot rides on being tapped and belonging. Ellison lays a foundation with the setting, the hormones, and peer pressure. Ghost stories, rumors, and secrets are part of the mortar that Ellison uses as she throws in one twist after another. When a student is found dead, the scramble begins to find out if she committed suicide or if she was pushed. One mystery builds upon another in a race to save the school's reputation, and to get to the bottom of multiple suspenseful and shocking elements, all tied to one student.

Whether you are looking for a quick read to end 2019 with, or your first read of 2020, Good Girls Lie needs to be added to your TBR list. Also, kudos to J.T. Ellison, providing the Suicide Prevention Lifeline number at the end of her book and telling readers they aren't alone. Since I didn't have a cover with this egalley, I thought that would be the best "cover," to share.

Thank you to @netgalley and @harlequinbooks for providing this book in exchange for an honest review. @thrillerchick, this was worth the wait and anticipation. Book Review: No Fences In Alaska by Glen Sobey Release Date 6/27/2019

4 stars for No Fences in Alaska!

Cooper Lyons hasn't spoken to his son or grandchildren in years. Every year, he sends Christmas cards with gift cards in them. Year after year goes by without any responses. He chose to start over in Alaska years ago when his reputation was scarred by lies and deceit. Out of the blue, he gets a phone call from his teenage granddaughter,  also desperate for a chance to start over and get away from her difficult parents.

What develops as soon as Harper arrives to stay with her grandfather is incredibly moving. Odds are, if you have a grandparent that has loved you into being, you'll see pieces of them in this book and you'll reflect on that love and the impact it has had on your life.

Harper struggles with so many of the things that have been plaguing young adults for as long as humans been wandering this earth. Author Glen Sobey does a really great job weaving in acceptance, freedom, peer pressure, the search for unconditional love, and self-identity as key threads in No Fences In Alaska. And, he really wrote like he has experience with all of the above from the perspective of  a grandparent, a parent, sibling, and teenager.

The other thing that I loved about No Fences in Alaska was the scenery. Glen does a magnificent job describing the setting in the book. I felt like I was also among the moose and bears, hiking, and surrounded by majestic views and the smell of moss and cold air.

I hesitate to put this one in the hands of a young teenager and that's why it didn't get 5 shining stars from me. Y'all please don't throw tomatoes at me. I'm aware of how many awards this book has won. There are 2 sides of the fence (pun intended). And, since all of my kids are preteens, my opinion may be a little biased. Maybe they'll all get a copy the first time drugs, sex, or naked pictures turn up on their phones. Teenagerdom is going to hit my household like a wrecking ball, I'm sure of it.

Thank you to my friends @blackrosewriting for providing this read to me after the release date. I wanted to read it after so many fellow bookbloggers were talking it up on instagram and reached out for the opportunity to review it. Thank you also to @glensobeyauthor for educating me on a few things and taking me on an adventure in Alaska with a grandpa similar to my own. #nofencesinalaska #blackrosewriting #glensobey #alaskanbook  #4stars #bookreview #oakcitybooks #winterreading #takemetoalaska #sendmemorebooks #readmorebooks #bookstagram #bibliophile #bookworm #booknerd #read #literarygrandpas

Book Review: Thin Ice by Paige Shelton Release Date 12/03/19

5 Stars for Thin Ice by Paige Shelton! This one was a nail-biter y'all. Literally, I have no nails left to paint for Thanksgiving. I finished this book at 1:30am this morning and wanted to sneak away for a few minutes and let you all know about it. I hope you each find some time to read over the holiday. I'm so thankful for this book community, full of writers, readers, and people who get me.

I read this book in 2 sittings. Not because I had the time, but because I just couldn't put it down. I made my husband drive everywhere yesterday so that I could read. Set in Alaska, this book will practically freeze you to death. The book starts out with a detailed, harrowing flight on a teeny plane and Paige Shelton works her magic. Before you know it, you're with an author, hiding from her killer in Benedict, Alaska. Benedict, Alaska may as well be called Nostoplightsville, Alaska with a population of 500 where everyone knows everyone.

Running from her kidnapper and recovering from the life-threatening escape, Beth has a hard time trusting anyone, and when a murder in the small town brings them together, Beth finds herself in the middle of it all.

I highly recommend this one. I felt like the characters were all crafted around people that we would be able to point out if we visited this fictional town in Alaska. By the time I got to 85% (thank you, Kindle) I still was wide-eyed and freezing as I tried to piece together how Paige was going to package up the ending. Beautifully written, full of winter, warmth, ice, and plenty of suspense.

Thank you to @Netgalley @stmartinspress @minotaur_books @paigebooks for this gem of a read. Book Review: Empty Nesters by Carolyn Brown Released 7/23/19

5 Stars for Empty Nesters by Carolyn Brown! Find your big fuzzy blanket, wool socks, and quiet corner to dive into this one. This is the perfect "feel good," read as fall quickly turns to winter. This book was charming, funny, heart-wrenching, and everything you want this time of they year.

Three military wives have lived in the same neighborhood since their girls were 5. Now, following in the footsteps of their fathers, they've all signed up for the military given their mamas a lot to deal with.  The mamas will have to lean on each other and their neighborhood granny, Tootsie to get through all the feelings that come with divorce, death, second chances, and acceptance. When they all pile in Tootsie's RV, they embark on a journey full of equal parts laughter, tears, and strength. They remind us that home is what we make it, with those we love. And, that with the right friends beside us we can weather any storm life throws our way.

There was a lovely surprise at the end, one I was hoping for and the way Carolyn captures the voice of her Texas characters is charming and just right.

If you're looking for a lighthearted, warm, and feel-good book, this is it. This book was released earlier in the summer but I'm really glad that I didn't dive into it until now.

Book Review: Single by KL Slater Release date: 11/25/19

5 Stars for Single by KL Slater. Y'all, I was trying to figure out just how many characters were legit crazy in this one. It was a great read and I had the hardest time trying to figure out who was lying and who was telling the truth and then BAM, BAM, BAM KL Slater threw in one twist after another.

Darcy lost her kids after her husband passed away. It broke her psychologically and her in-laws obtained custody of them while she recovered and got her life back on track. Once she was able to get her two boys back, she continued to have a very close relationship with her in-laws. That is, until a handsome doctor saved one of their lives in the park. Then, things started to get very interesting and multiple threads begin to unravel, leaving the reader wondering if Darcy has been lying to herself the entire time. Is this new guy is going to save Darcy and make all of her dreams come true? Are all of the people in Darcy's life are out to get her? Is she having another psychological break?

I wasn't sure what to believe until the last 30 pages of this ride, and I was shocked that Darcy was wrong about a lot of things. But, she was also right about a lot of things, too. Do we believe what we want to believe? At what cost? Is everyone out to get Darcy? Well, I guess you'll have to read to find out.

I was provided this book in exchange for an honest book review. Thank you, @klslaterauthor @bookouture @netgalley, please keep sending me great ones like this :)

Book Review: The Perfect Widow by A.M. Castle Release Date 11/15/19

2 stars for The Perfect Widow. I was anticipating that this would be one of my favorite fall books. I hate to say, I was really disappointed. I struggled the most with the back and forth with character perspectives and the flip flop between past and present. I kept pushing through, hoping that there would be one of the characters that I would like. Unfortunately, neither one of the main characters sucked me in. I spent most of the book trying to figure out the link between the women while understanding how the additional characters contributed to the overall story.

I don't take book reviews lightly and hate giving 2 stars. But, I can't sleep tonight without being honest. I was provided this book in exchange for an honest review. And, there wasn't a cover for me to even use and make a cutesy picture!

Review: The RBG Way by Rebecca Gibian Release Date 11/12/19

3 Stars for The RBG Way by Rebecca Gibian. I had really high hopes for this one. I was thinking this book would be a great break from my thrillers and suspenseful fiction. I have to say, I was pretty disappointed. This book had the right idea, but became very reference-y pretty quickly.

I thought this would be less about RBG's court cases and more about her grit. Some would probably argue with me and say there was an awful lot of mention of her grit in the pages of The RBG Way but there were so many quotes and referenced texts of other recent authors, it really felt like I was reading someone's research paper on RBG.

I must say, I did highlight a few passages that I liked. However, I lost interest quickly and was more interested in seeking out the other books and articles referenced than continuing to read this one. I liked Rebecca's' tone and voice, and did like reading about RBG's relationship with her husband, Marty. I was fascinated by the part of the book that discussed their love story, trials, and triumphs. I just couldn't stay interested in the case after case after case pieces in the book that continued from beginning to end.

If someone was looking for a good book on RBG that referenced lots of others, this would be perfect. And, I guess since Rebecca couldn't interview RBG for the book, she did the best she could with the data and information she had. It was clear that she spent a lot of time digging and putting pieces together. It just wasn't for me.

I was provided this book free of charge in exchange for an honest review.

Book Review: Off the Grid by John Hunt Release Date 10/31/19

5 Stars for Off the Grid by John Hunt! I didn't quite finish this one in time for Halloween but it's a great fall read, nonetheless! The first 5 pages were nauseatingly descriptive. So much so that I was hoping the gruesome details were only at the beginning and the rest of the book would be dedicated to resolution and justice. I was immediately hooked.

John Hunt chooses an unlikely hero in this book, a survivor. A lonely recluse who lost it all, lives "off the grid," until he can no longer sit back and pretend he wasn't forever changed the day his family died in a mall shooting. He hates all things human, all things noise, and has carved out a life for himself in the middle of nowhere. Until he steps in and saves a little girl.

Jodi knows there's something special about Graham. People in town turn away, cannot look him in the eye, and are disturbed by his physical scars and appearance. Graham realizes that Jodi is different too. They bond over coffee, wine, and books. When Jodi is called away in an emergency and her life may be in danger, Graham cannot sit by and wait to lose the only thing that has started to matter to him.

Three seemingly ordinary friends (two of them brothers) are caught in a string of lies, crime, and unthinkable pasts. When the truth starts to unfold, one victim at a time, Jodi and Graham get caught in the middle. And, they end up back at the mall, where Graham lost his family.

The last quarter of this book was a race. I flew through the end, ready to see what was going to happen to Graham, Jodi, and the malicious trio. John left me guessing, holding my breath, and begging for justice.

This book was provided to me for free, in exchange for an honest review. Thank you @blackrosewriting and @netgalley. #bookreviews #5stars #johnhunt #offthegrid #needtoread #bookblogger #5stars #suspensefulread #sendmemorebooks #readmorebooks #booknerd @oakcitybooks #oakcitybooks

*This book had more drug use and very descriptive criminal activity, a lot more than I typically like to read. I found parts of it very disturbing. However, I think that's the effect and impact that John was going for.
